Let's Talk Medicare.jpg

What Is Medicare?

Imagine finally being eligible for an insurance plan, which you've been paying for, in the form of income taxes, for at least 10 years, and learning that it doesn't cover everything you expected it to cover.

THAT'S MEDICARE

Now imagine having all the benefits in Medicare Part A and B and adding prescription drug coverage, dental care, vision and hearing coverage, gym membership, OTC allowance and other benefits.

THAT'S MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

Medicare Advantage also pays your Part A & B deductibles, as well as the 20% not covered by Medicare Part B. And on top of that, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan with a $0 monthly premium.

That’s right, you pay ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

So, “What’s the catch?” you ask. Well, here's your answer.

Private insurance companies that offer Medicare Advantage plans, have a contract with the federal government, which pays them a set amount for each person who enrolls in a Medicare Advantage plan. This arrangement removes the risk from the government and places it on the insurance companies. The companies provide managed care to keep their costs down and are able to offer more benefits to their enrollees.

Understanding Original Medicare

Original Medicare is health insurance issued by the federal government. It consists of only two parts: Part A, hospital coverage and Part B, coverage for medical services. There are two other parts of Medicare which are not provided by the government: Part C, which is known as Medicare Advantage and Part D, prescription drug coverage. Both parts C & D are only offered by private insurance companies.  Medicare Advantage actually includes Parts A & B, and may also include Part D, as well as many other benefits, like vision and dental. Medicare Advantage plans offer the most comprehensive healthcare coverage with the greatest amount of savings.

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are offered by private insurance companies that have been approved by the federal government. They are required by law to cover everything that is covered by Original Medicare (Parts A & B). In addition, Medicare Advantage plans offer more coverage, extra benefits and a great deal of savings compared to Original Medicare. Many Medicare Advantage plans have $0 monthly premiums, $0 deductibles and $0

co-payments for most medical services and procedures; and, unlike Original Medicare, they also have out-of-pocket limits as low as $500.

  • You must live in the area where the plan is offered

  • You must already have Medicare Part A and Part B

  • You must be a United States citizen or be lawfully present in the U.S.

There are three different types of Medicare Advantage plans which are the most common. In order to decide between them, you will have to consider a number of things, including how much money you are able to spend on your healthcare.

When you consider the high costs of healthcare, it is important to find ways to cut those costs so that you can maintain your standard of living. With Medicare Advantage, there are a large number of ways in which to save money, from $0 additional benefits, which you would otherwise have to pay for, to $0 out-of-pocket costs normally associated with insurance coverage.

Make sure that the hospitals, clinics and urgent care centers you would like to continue using are part of your new plan's provider network.

Take into account your current health condition, illnesses and specific medical needs to make sure they will be fully covered by your new plan.

Consider how much money you may need for expenses, such as co-pays, co-insurance and items that may not be fully covered by your new plan.

Check that the primary doctor, specialists and dentists you would like to begin or continue seeing are part of your new plan's provider network.

Determine which additional services and benefits are most important to you and confirm that they are being offered by your new plan.

Make a list of all of your prescription medications to check that they are covered and whether or not they will have co-pays under the new plan.
